By 1835, John James had been exiled in Van Diemen’s Land for 8
years. Originally sentenced as a convict, he bettered himself to
become part of the colony's law force, known as "Field Police"
spending his time roaming Van Diemen’s Land’s Heritage Highway in
the late 1820s and 30s.
Wherever he went , James was
accompanied by his two trusty companions – his horse BO and his dog,
the Guv’nor.
John James' field journal records the stories of foul deeds
(committed in the region of the Heritage Highway) which James was
employed to tackle where matters were too delicate, dangerous or
dastardly to be entrusted to others.
In the 1830s John James had his work cut out keeping law and
order. He sometimes lost the plot.
The challenge is for you to find it again!
